Don Gray has been arranging music for Southern Gateway since
the late 1960's and has also arranged for men and women's choruses and
quartets the world over. Don has had his music published by SPEBSQSA so

to enjoy them for years. Don was introduced to four-part harmony by his father while Don was stationed in El Paso, Texas in 1961. He has been a member of the "Roaring 20's" and "His Masters Voice" quartets. He is also a certified judge in the Arrangement and Music categories. The Southern Gateway Chorus is indeed fortunate to have Bob Moorehead in its ranks. Along with his quartet and chorus coaching abilities, Bob has been a SPEBSQSA-certified judge in the Sound and Singing categories since 1976. He became hooked on barbershop quartet singing in high school, where some friends got together to "woodshed" tunes and sing on the annual "Talent Show". Bob fondly remembers, their rendition of "Coney Island Babe" bringing the house down. His college years involved singing in a quartet that included Rod Nixon, baritone of the 1997 International Champs-Yesteryear. Bob has been a member of Southern Gateway since 1965 and has performed with them in nearly every International appearance, except Detroit and Atlanta, at which he served on the judging panel. As a performer, Bob has several JAD Championships as Tenor of Act IV, The Naturals and Rumors, as well as several "Top Ten" International appearances with The Roaring 20's and Rumors. His highest achievements occurred with The Naturals, as multiple International medalists during the early 1990's. In the "real world", Bob has spent nearly 40 years in the insurance business, and is currently owner of an Independent Agency in Milford, Ohio. |

Paul Gilman - Our Musical Director: An infectious smile, bright eyes, positive mental attitude and enthusiasm for performing are readily evident in the rhythmic flow of his persona when Paul Gilman directs the Southern Gateway Chorus. He specializes in firsts. In his very first quartet competition at the 1987 International Finals of the Barbershop Society, he earned a gold medal with the Interstate Rivals. In his first Johnny Appleseed District Finals directing Southern Gateway, the Chorus qualified as one of the 22 finalists to compete in the 2001 International Contest in Nashville. His next first?...we can hardly wait. Paul is one of a truly elite fraternity of men who have earned TWO quartet gold medals. As baritone of the Interstate Rivals and most recently Marquis, the 1995 champion, he experienced applause and adoration of audiences in 40 states and 9 countries throughout the world. He also won a chorus gold medal as Music Vice President and Assistant Director of Southern Gateway in 1992. This is one of 10 gold, silver and bronze chorus medals he has received since joining Gateway in 1982. The youngest of five children who grew up in College Hill, Paul played piano and was selected for Who's Who in High School Music when he was president of the choir. He graduated from Ohio State in 1981 with a major in Computer Information Systems and today is a manager in that department for the EW Scripps Company. Paul and Debbie, who met at Ohio State, live in White Oak and are the proud parents of Marie, a fifth grader. Golf, running, managing Marie's softball team and directing Southern Gateway are Paul's hobbies. This friendly approachable, unassuming man leads by example and is respected and admired by the guys on the risers. As a two time world champion quartet singer, Paul has benefited from one-on-one coaching by icons in the Barbershop Society...Jim Miller, eight-time gold medallist and Director Emeritus of Gateway; Ken Buckner, also of Louisville; Larry Ajer and other notables. His motivation? To give his know-how back to the Chorus so that you, our audience will be moved by the music of Gateway. |
